help

I haven’t been able to find the words to write lately. Even this is taking me way too long to write…. writing about not being able to write. (ironic) I have been feeling very stuck lately in a few aspects of life. I’m waiting to go back to Spain. I need to go back and get back to myself again and get out of this weird limbo.

Instead of taking all this free time I have and doing something productive with myself… such as working on my scrapbook/journal with the heaps of things I collected during my travels, or even just writing more on my blog, or just doing anything I find my days slowly vanishing from me, and not realizing what I actually accomplished during that day.

I have started multiple blog posts over these past few months but I seem to never be able to write anything worth posting. I need some inspiration … which i know seems ridiculous… how could I possibly be feeling uninspired to write when I spent the past year living in Europe and traveling at least once a month. I have the things to write about but I just keep getting stuck putting these memories and experiences into words. So what I’ve decided to do is ask for help. I just want to connect with some other people out here in the blogging world. I e-mail back and forth with a few other bloggers and talking about life, the world, travels, anything and everything, hearing about their blogs, recommendations for my blog…. all these things sometimes give me a spark not only to write but also to keep going with my blog. I want to feel inspired again, and what better way than with the help of other people. People and this world do truly inspire me.

So basically what I’m saying is that anyone who reads this blog of mine (hey you thanks for reading!) If you wanna reach out to me and just talk about life, or talk about my blog, you have any ideas for me … anything. Please reach out to me (theconfessionsofawanderer@gmail.com) … I would like to resurrect this blog and improve it and any help from anyone would be great… also I just like to make new friends and have pen-pals (e-mail pals?) from all over the world. So if you want to reach out please do!

  1. I can definitely relate to this. I spent 5 weeks traveling through Europe a few months back and ever since being back, I can’t seem to find the motivation to write. Writing almost seems like a chore now, where it used to be fun. I’m also struggling to find my motivation again, but a few things have helped me find that spark.. I started reading the journal I kept while traveling and it got me all excited because I had forgotten so many of the details of our daily travels. I also love doing photo posts when I’m lacking motivation to write because photos are pretty easy to edit (doesn’t take too much thinking) and everyone loves to look at beautiful pictures! Another thing I’ve been doing is instead of writing about somewhere I’ve been, I write a post about somewhere I’m dying to visit. Thinking about my next adventure gets me really excited so writing about it doesn’t seem as daunting. Hopefully you find your mojo again, soon 🙂 don’t give up on blogging because in the end it’s so rewarding! Everyone has periods of lacking motivation but stick with it and it’ll get better!

    1. It’s almost as if writing about it is like reliving it, which is hard because the memories are so awesome and we just want to go back to that. But then again it is nice to relive these amazing memories and places. It does get exciting thinking about the next adventures, always itching for more adventures! Looking forward to following more of yours

  2. Hi Sam, just wanted to say I understand what you feel, and I’m sure we all have such moments in life. Yours is probably related to traveling and moving around, and being conflicted about who you are, who you want to be. But you are so young, and you are having this experience that many will give everything to have, you are lucky. Don’t worry if you can’t write at the moment. Not being able to write about what you’ve experienced doesn’t change at all who you are. Don’t feel pressure to share your experiences with the world, as what matters the most is that you’ve lived them and enjoyed them, no one will take that from you. I don’t know you so I don’t know how much writing means to you, but maybe try to express what you feel through other means, maybe photography, or something more visual? Or start writing in your personal journal, rather than doing it on the blog? My email is claudia_curici@yahoo.com, I’m happy to stay in touch if you would like to.

  3. you’re suffering from a disconnect of creativity and discipline. i used to think inspiration was necessary for creation, but if there’s anything that life has taught me in the last year, it’s that nothing is further from the truth. creation can be fueled by inspiration, but it’s born from effort. sometimes you have to write 100 pages of garbage just to find 1 good one, but that’s better than never starting.
my recommendation to you is the other thing i learned in the last year from my travels (i haven’t traveled in 6 months now, but you’d never know it from my blog): go simpler. the world is always screaming at you to go big. get a bigger car, eat a bigger meal, take a bigger trip, have bigger muscles, get bigger boobs, have bigger dreams… but often the best things in life are the smaller things. if you don’t know what to write about… stop trying to come up with big concepts, and tell a smaller story. write a short story about someone you met while you traveled. describe something you ate one time and how it made you feel. did the flavor linger? did the smell take you back to another time? what was going on all around you in the cafe? were there any funny characters nearby? what was your server like? describe a scene, and deliberately have no point to your story, no statement. simply do your best to recreate something. keep doing this, over and over, even if the subject seems dull. describe a walk around your neighborhood, and pay attention to everything. seems pretty dull huh? you do this enough, and you’ll start to lose yourself in the writing every time you do it, and you’ll learn that sometimes the best writing is trying to tell you absolutely nothing at all.

…but when you DO start to find your voice again, you’ll find that the exercises described above have turned you into a wholly different writer, a better writer. because the best writers may leave things out, but they never miss a thing.

    1. Thank you so much! You have truly inspired me to find some words again. I’m going to take these questions and form multiple blog posts…. I find that I haven’t written much about my actual travels themselves and these questions you have proposed to me will lead me to do more of that! Look forward to hearing from you soon

  4. I can definitely relate to this experience as well. I studied abroad in Barcelona for a seven months in college and could not wait to return. Now that I’ve graduated, I’ve found that returning is a lot harder than I imagined, but no other place can satisfy my soul like Barcelona did. So I started this blog as well to help relive my experiences and sooth my wanderlust! But writing does get hard, especially when you feel stuck on where you are in life as well. If you need to take a break, don’t feel bad about it. If you need to start telling stories, then go ahead. If you feel like sharing pictures, that’s awesome as well. Above all else, do whatever makes you happy! 🙂

    1. Thanks for your kind abad inspiring words! Fortunately I am returning back to barcelona next month, but until I return I feel unsettled. I am glad you understand the pure magic that is Barcelona. If you ever find yourself back in Barcelona be sure to send me a message!

  5. I wonder what you liked more: belgian beer or German? Did you like the cakes in French bakeries more than in Germany? If you had to choose, then which would you rather have: the crusty French breads with cheese or the Italian breads with olive oil and fresh salad? It would be great to start a conversation on any of these topics, and others which might bring back great memories.

  6. Hey Sam,

I know the feeling. I’m really only just starting my blogging, but It’s easy to feel uninspired (or in my case lazy) even when you’re in an amazing location, living a life that everyone else wishes they were.

I don’t know what the answer is, but if you’d like to talk, I also love making friends all around the world! Especially other travellers and bloggers.

  7. I know exactly what you’re feeling, was in Spain myself and since I’ve comeback its been so hard to feel “at home ” again, feel like a part of me is gone! I guess we’ll never feel at home again, cause that’s the price we pay for loving and knowing people in more than one place. I too have weeks when I struggle to write but don’t worry, it will pass and you’ll soon feel motivated again. x 🙂

  8. Sam, I know how you’re feeling. Years ago I spent 16 months in Egypt and then went home to Nebraska. It was the hardest adjustment I ever had, but I got through it, and so will you. Give it time. I think one of the hardest things and is that sometimes you have no one to talk to about your experiences and your new ways of thinking and all that stuff that comes with living outside your square.

In the end I did get back to Egypt (worked hard and saved money) and much of the rest of the Middle East. Now I live in Australia and spend at least six months of the year travelling. Try to stay positive and look forward.

And don’t be afraid to write about having nothing to write. Your thoughts have strength too.

    Thinking of you.
