Love Abroad

What happens when you fall in love abroad?

I thought that would be a question I would never need to figure out the answer to, a problem I would never face. But sometimes life doesn’t happen the way you think it will. But the reality is I’ve met someone and it’s really changed everything.

The most difficult piece of all this is not knowing what the future holds, my future is so blurry, I have no set plans, no clear path. And while that makes all the possibilities completely endless it also is quite scary… what will I choose next, will it be something with him or will it be something by myself. If I choose to make my next step with him, is that the right thing to be doing? But if I make my next move without him, have I let go of something I should’ve held on to?

This is the blessing and the curse about meeting someone abroad, they come from a completely different place than you. I’m from the United States and he’s from Colombia, and here we both are in Spain.

While I have no clue what the future holds for us, I’m trying to just enjoy the moments that I have with him here in Barcelona.
I don’t know what the right thing is to do, I’m not even sure if there is a right thing to do. But I’m trying to enjoy the time now, and think carefully about the future, but not to over think it.

Life is full of uncertainty.

In the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take, relationships we were afraid to have, and the decisions we waited to long to make.

  1. I know how you feel! Fell for an Irishman while I was on exchange last year in Ireland. Like you said, enjoy the moments, you don’t have to have a set plan. We didn’t plan while I was living there, but the week before I had to return home to Canada he told me he was considering coming to Canada for awhile. He came to Canada for 4 months and I’ve also gone to visit. I’m moving back in the Fall to do a masters. You never know what will happen! 🙂

  2. Hi! Long distance relationships are tough, we made it work for a while.
I love your “living in the moment” attitude; as hard as it is, enjoy your time together and just see where life takes you.

  3. Oh, and make sure you’re living for you. My motto this year has been to “make life happen”. As long as you can also at night knowing you’ve done right by you, and living in line with your values, life is all good.

  4. I bit the bullet, moved, got married, got pregnant.. the whole shebang. I completely relate to how you feel; it’s exciting and terrifying! If I can offer any advice, it’s this; don’t over-plan, but have a plan. I think I am incredibly lucky; my love abroad turned out to be my soulmate (if you believe in that..), but we are now in a very uncomfortable position – he has lost his job and it is culturally a bit of a no-no for me to work while pregnant, so with neither of us working and a baby due immanently we’re struggling a bit and the stress is pretty palpable! Love is wonderful, but life can interfere if you let it; plan a little and then just go with your instincts. Good luck with whatever you end up doing!

    1. Thank you so much for your words. It’s hard to find the perfect balance between planning for the future but not over planning. But slowly as the time passes the “right” thing to do is becoming more and more clear… and that’s making this relationship work and fighting for this love.

  6. I met my fiancé while he was studying abroad in the U.S., and we decided to start dating two weeks before he left. We’ve been long distance for three years, and it’s been extremely difficult but also totally worth it. I’m moving to his country in the fall, and we’re getting married next year!

  7. Brings up so many questions, doesn’t it? What to do? Different countries. Different destinies? Dreams are born, but can they come true? I like most of all how you talk about enjoying each moment right there. Stay in the moment. That way, no matter what the future holds, you will always remember this time because you truly lived it. Good luck!
